Since 2021, Toulouse has been part of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network in the field of music. This distinction highlights its commitment to musical diversity: world music, urban music, and local traditions all coexist here. Iconic festivals such as Rio Loco, innovative venues such as the Metronum, and support for local artists illustrate the richness of Toulouse’s vibrant and inclusive music scene.
The Canal du Midi, a jewel of world heritage in Toulouse

Dominique VIET – CRTL Occitanie
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, the Canal du Midi is one of Toulouse’s most iconic UNESCO sites. A masterpiece by Pierre-Paul Riquet, this 17th-century canal connects Toulouse to the Mediterranean Sea over a distance of nearly 240 km. Lined with century-old plane trees, it now offers an idyllic setting for bike rides, river cruises, or bucolic breaks in the heart of the city.
The Brienne Canal, a hidden treasure of UNESCO-listed Toulouse
Less well known than the Canal du Midi but just as charming, the Canal de Brienne is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It connects the Garonne River to the Canal du Midi and runs through the heart of Toulouse. This peaceful little canal is part of the Grand Parc Canal, an ambitious project to promote waterways that perfectly embodies the spirit of Toulouse: preserving, connecting, and inspiring.
The Basilica of Saint-Sernin and the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques: symbols of Toulouse
These two major monuments in the Pink City are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela.
- The Basilica of Saint-Sernin, a masterpiece of Romanesque art, is one of the largest in Europe.
- The Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Jacques, a former medieval hospital, now houses cultural and administrative spaces.
Both illustrate the spiritual, artistic, and humanistic richness of Toulouse.
Toulouse at UNESCO, between heritage and modernity
A city of contrasts and encounters, Toulouse UNESCO elegantly combines past and future. Every street tells a story, every canal invites you to daydream. For travelers in search of culture, nature, and music, Toulouse is an essential, authentic, and inspiring destination.
